Athens, Tennessee: McMinn High School’s Camden Goforth, who recently flipped from Coastal Carolina to West Virginia ends his recruiting while preparing for his senior year as a Cherokee. The massive 6’4 300 plus pound guard has stacked more pancakes than IHOP. With over a hundred pancake blocks his junior season, Goforth intends on putting more defensive
adversaries on their backs. Not only is Camden aggressive, mean, and physical, he’s agile enough to get on the perimeter and lead block, he can pull on the inside and outside, and he finishes blocks with the best of ‘em. The VIP Crew caught up with the new Mountaineer to discuss all things football!
The VIP Crew: Camden, you recently flipped your commitment from Coastal Carolina to West Virginia. What was the determining factor behind that move?
Goforth: The level of opportunity at WVU. Don’t get me wrong, Coastal is an amazing place with great coaches, but at the end of the day I felt like WVU was the best place for me in so many ways.
The VIP Crew: It’s rare to see someone your size (6’4 315 pounds) not only playing guard, but watching tape on you, they utilize inside and outside pulls with you and you’re able to show off your versatility. How beneficial will that be for you at the next level?
Goforth: Very beneficial, that versatility paired with my physicality is exactly what was noticed by college coaches. My ability to move and the violence of play is the feedback I get from coaches the most.
The VIP Crew: First things first though, what are your personal and team goals for your senior season at McMinn High School?
Goforth: My goals are basically to have the most dominant season I can have all while having fun. I had 108.5 pancakes last season; I want to increase that all while polishing technique and fundamentals. Team goals is to get the region back and be dominant in the post season playoffs.
The VIP Crew: You flattened a lot of opponents. Goodness. I’m very old school and I’m telling you now, you could play for me. You play with a nastiness and meanness that I feel is lost in today’s football, especially in the trenches. Where does that mean streak come from?
Goforth: It comes from the years of coaching I’ve had. I started playing at 4 years old and would run the opposite way so I wouldn’t get hit. So, Coach Watson & Burnett lined up the biggest kid on the team against me that was a couple years older than me and let him wear me out over and over. One day in practice I decided I was done with that and drove him back and pancaked him, been pancaking people ever since.
The VIP Crew: You definitely have some devastating pancake blocks, vicious kickout blocks from last season, do you have a favorite or one that stands out in your mind?
Goforth: Absolutely! I had a pull block against Tyner that I leveled the linebacker, I’m still getting comments and feedback from that one play.
The VIP Crew: Knowing what you bring to the table, are you approaching this season expecting to get everyone’s best when facing you?
Goforth: Absolutely, I know football is a sport that everyone is trying to prove themselves. When you commit to a top-level team, you have a target on you for sure.
The VIP Crew: What has the offseason preparation been like for you and what are some of the things you felt you needed to work on?
Goforth: Offseason has been great with mobility training and weight lifting. I hold 4 school records now in the weight room. But now, I definitely need to focus on conditioning and getting better prepared for the P4 [Power Four] level.
The VIP Crew: Mentally, was it better for you to commit and have the recruiting completely shut down before the season started?
Goforth: Definitely, that was my hope and plan all along. I wanted to be locked in with a program before season and that has happened now. This allows me to focus on my senior season and focus efforts with the coaches at WVU to prepare for the next year.
The VIP Crew: What has your time with the Cherokees meant to you on an athletic and personal level?
Goforth: It’s been very special for me. This is home. I had over 50 high school football programs contact me about transferring, I knew some of the opportunities was amazing but McMinn and being a Cherokee was more important than anything else for me. My recruitment turned out exactly how it was supposed to, and I remained happy at home, that’s priceless.
The VIP Crew: What kind of football player did West Virginia just land? What does Camden Goforth bring to the table?
Goforth: A nasty football player that is definitely bringing physicality and intensity to the table.
The VIP Crew: If finishing blocks was a person, you’d be the posterchild for it. Congratulations on the commitment to WVU Football, and I wish you a healthy and productive senior season. Is there anything you’d like to add before I let you go? Anyone you want to thank?
Goforth: I want to thank God first and foremost, couldn’t have made it here without his blessings. My parents, who have poured so much into helping me. Every coach, scout, and evaluator that has helped in any way. Thank you for this opportunity and the well wishes! With that I say, “Country Roads Take Me Home!”
